What the light indicates
The particulate filter warning light (or the engine light, depending on the vehicle) signals that the system has detected a level of clogging or a fault. The symbol and exact meaning vary from vehicle to vehicle: check the owner's manual.
What to do right away
- Read the manual: some manufacturers advise driving a stretch at sustained speed to help regeneration, others do not.
- Do not ignore the light and do not keep driving for long in these conditions: the clogging can get worse.
- If you notice a loss of power, reduced-power mode or a strong exhaust smell, have the vehicle checked.
- Describe the lights and symptoms to a professional: a diagnosis shows whether the problem is in the filter or in other components.
The most common causes
- Short trips and mostly urban use
- Repeatedly interrupted regenerations
- Faulty pressure or temperature sensors
- Problems with injectors, the EGR valve or other components
- Damaged filter or filter saturated with ash
What not to do
Do not have the filter removed or deactivated: it is a component of the vehicle's emission control system and its removal is not part of our work.
